On Monday, June 17 at 2:30pm Dragonwings will be hosting a fairy garden workshop. Create your own fairy house and fairy garden with miniature plants from Turner’s Market. Participants may be ages 4 to adult, though children under the age of 10 must have an adult partner to help with hot glue (no additional fee for accompanying adults). The workshop fee is $15 per person and includes five fairy plants from Turner’s, a plastic container, fairy house materials, and materials to create garden accessories.
If you have a special container that you would prefer to plant in, or any items from home that you would like to include in your garden (shells from a trip to the beach, a thimble, a fairy figurine) we encourage you to bring them along.
Preregistration and prepayment are required as soon as possible. Space is limited, so register early! The Tuesday workshop sold out. We are offering it again on Monday, June 17, and spots are going fast, so please don’t delay.
October 6, 2011
On October 6th Dragonwings Bookstore is is planning to help break a world record for the largest shared reading experience in history. You can join us, and more than 2 million children and adults across the country and around the globe, by reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. We will be attempting to break the record set last year by 2,057,513 readers in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record literacy campaign.
Our Llama Llama Storytime at 1:00 PM on Thursday October 6 will be registered at Read for the Record. You can be part of our pledge group by coming to the storytime, or you can visit the store anytime on October 6th to read the book and be counted. We will make Llama Llama bookmarks and give out Llama Llama tattoos at our storytime.
Copies of the book will be available to read all day at Dragonwings, and Llama Llama dolls will be given away with any Llama Llama book purchase including the new release Llama Llama Home with Mama. Earlier in the day we will be visiting the Waupaca Pre-school to read to a class of 18 students. You could think about reading the book to a kindergarten class, or at a preschool or daycare center. It also counts if you read the book at home to your child. You can call us to be part of our pledge group, or you can sign up at Read for the Record (readfortherecord.com).
Why are we doing this? For fun and to support literacy programs:
Jumpstart was founded in 1993 at Yale University and has been setting up volunteer programs across the country to give children in low-income neighborhoods a jumpstart in preschool to help them be successful in life. The first Read for the Record campaign was launched in 2006 to raise awareness of Jumpstart’s literacy efforts. Each year since then Americans have joined together to break the world record by reading classic stories: The Little Engine That Could (2006), The Story of Ferdinand (2007), Corduroy (2008), The Very Hungry Caterpillar (2009), and The Snowy Day (2010).

Students from the Learning Cottage Daycare and Preschool went on a Field Trip to Dragonwings Bookstore last week. They each wore hand-decorated sun visors and carried slings for their water bottles. At Dragonwings they hunted for dragons, raced cars on the Ramp Racer, set up the train set, held a Fastrack competition, and prepared and served lots of “cookies, ice cream, and pie” to their friends.
Ethan, Hayden, Landon and Carson started their visit by checking out the toys and games at Dragonwings.
Landon and Brady face off in a Fastrack competition. Brady was the overall champion, losing only one game.
Talon served food through every opening in our big tree.
